There are aspects of economics, finance, corporate finance, and accounting that simply cannot be accurately translated without a solid foundation of knowledge and experience in these fields. Take, for example, a seemingly basic concept: “When interest rates on government bonds rise, their prices fall.” For a general translator unfamiliar with this principle, even a straightforward sentence like this could lead to a misinterpretation—and a flawed translation.

Though unrelated to economics, we've encountered a striking example of this in a trial translation involving golf. A translator rendered the sentence—intended to describe a ball landing on the green and rolling toward the hole—as “The ball went into the woods and approached a coffee cup.” The translator was ultimately not selected, due to a lack of contextual understanding. Ironically, their work in financial and accounting translations was excellent—they had simply never played golf.

This “golf translation” analogy perfectly applies to finance-related translations. More than a matter of skill, it’s often a matter of whether the translator knows the subject.
