What is the Turkish language?
Turkish is the official language of the Republic of Turkey and the Republic of Cyprus. It is also spoken by large communities in North Macedonia, Bulgaria, and Greece.
Modern Turkish is based on Ottoman Turkish, which was heavily influenced by Arabic and Persian. Due to its geographic proximity, it also contains many loanwords from Bulgarian and Greek.
Following the establishment of the Republic of Turkey in 1924, a language reform was introduced. This reform:
- Reduced the use of Arabic and Persian vocabulary and grammar
- Simplified the complex structure of Ottoman Turkish
- Replaced the Arabic script with the Latin alphabet
This transformation laid the foundation for modern Turkish, making it more accessible and standardized.
The Turkish Script
Turkish uses the Latin alphabet, consisting of the standard 26 letters, plus ç, ş, ğ, ı, ö, and ü. The letters q, w, and x are only used in foreign words.

Other language variations, such as "Turquía" in Spanish and "Turquie" in French, are also being unified under "Türkiye".
In Japan, the term "Republic of Türkiye" has started appearing in websites, news reports, and articles.
