The Czech Republic: A Timeless Presence in the Heart of Europe
The Czech Republic is a country beloved in Japan for its romantic medieval charm that still lingers in its architecture and atmosphere. Although there are currently no direct flights between Japan and the Czech Republic, recent discussions between aviation authorities (as reported by Japan’s Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism) suggest that a direct route may be established in the near future—an encouraging sign of growing interest and connection between the two nations. As ties strengthen, opportunities to engage with the Czech language are also likely to expand.
From a business perspective, the Czech Republic has long been a trusted partner to Japanese companies—especially in the automotive and manufacturing sectors, as well as in research and development. Its strategic location in the heart of Europe, combined with a highly developed transportation infrastructure, makes it an ideal base for global business operations. The Czech government also offers a stable business environment, and the country’s strong tradition of technical education provides a steady stream of skilled professionals—key advantages for international partnerships.

What is the Czech language?
The Czech Language: Complex, Unique, and Deeply Rooted
Czech is the official language of the Czech Republic, which became an independent nation in 1993 following the peaceful dissolution of Czechoslovakia.
Although Czech and Slovak have long been recognized as separate languages, they are closely related and largely mutually intelligible.
Czech is known for its rich system of inflection and highly flexible word order, making it one of the most challenging languages to master.
In terms of pronunciation, Czech features unique phonetic elements not found in other Slavic languages—some of which even require focused practice for native Czech children to learn correctly.
Czech Script
Czech uses the Latin alphabet,
enhanced by diacritical marks such as the háček (ˇ), čárka (´), and kroužek (˚) to indicate pronunciation distinctions.
Example: Můj kamarád se učí česky.
(My friend is studying Czech.)

Cultural and Historical Ties Between Czechia and Japan
Czech–Japanese Relations: A Cultural Bond Rooted in History
The Czech Republic and Japan have enjoyed strong and friendly relations since the Meiji era. Beginning in the late 19th century, numerous Czech architects came to Japan, contributing to the country's modern architectural landscape. One notable example is the Hiroshima Prefectural Commercial Exhibition Hall, designed by Czech architect Jan Letzel—today known to the world as the Atomic Bomb Dome, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Another cultural bridge between the two nations is the celebrated Czech artist Alphonse Mucha, whose Art Nouveau style gained widespread popularity in Japan during the Meiji period. His work left a lasting impression on Japanese art, publishing, and architecture.
While Czech may not be a commonly encountered language in Japan, one Czech word has deeply embedded itself into the global vocabulary: "robot."
The term was first introduced by Czech writer Karel Čapek in his 1920 play R.U.R. (Rossum’s Universal Robots) to describe artificial human-like beings. The word derives from the Czech robota, meaning forced labor or drudgery.
