Denmark is a country where the vast majority of people speak English fluently. This is not only due to strong English education, but also because Danish is a relatively minor language with a small number of native speakers. Many books and films are not translated into Danish, and English-language TV shows are often aired in their original form.
In business, Danish companies—facing a small domestic market—tend to operate with a global mindset. As a result, English has become the common language in professional settings.
That said, Danes still speak Danish with family and among themselves, and they take pride in their national identity. Many words and expressions unique to Danish culture and thinking don’t translate easily into English.
Although the Danish translation market is relatively small, interest in Scandinavian lifestyles and values—exemplified by the concept of hygge—is growing in Japan. This may lead to more opportunities for Danish language content.
At NAIway Translation Service, we provide high-quality Danish translations tailored to the content and purpose of each project, handled by experienced and specialized translators.

What is the Danish language?
Danish is the official language of the Kingdom of Denmark. In addition to being spoken in border regions of neighboring Germany, it is widely studied in Iceland and recognized as an official language in the autonomous territories of the Faroe Islands and Greenland.
Historically, Denmark once held dominion over much of the Scandinavian Peninsula, leaving a strong linguistic influence on neighboring languages.
With over 15 vowel sounds (depending on classification), Danish is considered one of the more challenging languages to pronounce and understand. Its muffled, throat-heavy speech style has even been humorously compared to “speaking with a hot potato in your mouth.”
Grammatically, Danish bears similarities to English. However, its vocabulary shows clear influence from German and Dutch, particularly in the use of compound words—long strings of words combined without spaces. These compound terms often don’t appear in dictionaries, requiring the reader to break them down for meaning.
Danish Script
Danish uses the Latin alphabet, consisting of the standard 26 letters plus three additional characters: æ, ø, and å.

Danish is known for…
One of Denmark’s most famous cultural figures is the beloved fairy tale author Hans Christian Andersen. His collection of fairy tales, originally written in Danish, has been translated into over 150 languages worldwide. Along the canals of Copenhagen, visitors can find the iconic Little Mermaid statue—based on one of Andersen’s most cherished stories—making it a must-see attraction for tourists.
Denmark is also home to several globally recognized brands. Royal Copenhagen, a prestigious porcelain manufacturer with a royal warrant, is renowned for its timeless elegance. The country also boasts Carlsberg, one of the world’s leading beer producers; LEGO, the legendary toy brand adored by both children and adults; and Flying Tiger Copenhagen, a popular Scandinavian variety store known for its stylish and affordable goods.
