While the majority of Swedes speak fluent English, the demand for Swedish translations remains relatively low. However, there is a steady need for translations of official documents required to be in the national language, such as certificates, contracts, product information and SDSs in the pharmaceutical and chemical fields, as well as educational and cultural content including articles, books, videos, and survey questionnaires.

At NAIway Translation Service, we offer high-quality Swedish translations tailored to your specific content and purpose, delivered by experienced translators specialized in their respective fields.

What is the Swedish language?

Swedish is the official language of the Kingdom of Sweden. It is also one of the national languages of Finland, where it is used alongside Finnish—a legacy of Finland’s long history under Swedish rule. In the autonomous region of Åland, however, Swedish is the sole official language.

Swedish belongs to the North Germanic branch of the Germanic language family and shares its roots in Old Norse with Norwegian and Danish. These languages have evolved in close contact with one another, resulting in a certain degree of mutual intelligibility. Swedish also shares linguistic similarities with other Germanic languages such as English and German, particularly in grammar and vocabulary.

Swedish Script

Swedish uses the Latin script, consisting of the standard 26-letter alphabet, plus three additional characters: å, ä, and ö.

The Language Act of Sweden

Sweden consistently ranks at the top of the world in English proficiency. As a Germanic language closely related to English, Swedish shares a significant amount of vocabulary and grammatical structure, making it relatively easy for Swedes to learn. This linguistic similarity, combined with a globally-minded education system and the widespread broadcasting of English-language TV shows and films, has created an environment where English is naturally integrated into daily life.

Furthermore, as a nation that has welcomed refugees over the years, Sweden has evolved into a highly multilingual society, with over 200 languages spoken within its borders. In such a diverse setting, English has become the common language of communication in both academic and corporate environments.

However, the rise of English has sparked concerns within Sweden about the diminishing presence of the Swedish language in public life. In response, the government enacted the Swedish Language Act in 2009, officially designating Swedish as the country’s principal language (huvudspråk). For the first time, this law mandated the use of Swedish in courts, public authorities, and educational institutions. It also ensured that immigrants to Sweden are provided with support to learn the language through public services.

Sweden is known for…

When it comes to Swedish companies, names like Volvo, the iconic automobile manufacturer; IKEA, the global symbol of Scandinavian furniture design; and H&M, the fast fashion giant with stores across the world, immediately come to mind. Swedish product design and fashion—famous for their blend of functionality and beauty—are celebrated worldwide.

Sweden is also home to a host of innovative, tech-driven companies. These include Nobel Industries, founded by Alfred Nobel himself; Ericsson, a telecommunications pioneer instrumental in the development of Bluetooth; and Spotify, the trailblazing music streaming platform that revolutionized the way we listen to music.

Interestingly, Bluetooth, the wireless communication standard now common in smartphones and PCs, was named by a Swedish engineer at Ericsson after Harald “Bluetooth” Gormsson, a Danish king known for uniting Norway and Denmark peacefully—symbolizing the goal of unifying communication protocols.

Sweden has also given the world timeless children’s literature. Classics such as The Wonderful Adventures of Nils and Pippi Longstocking were born here. Even Tove Jansson, the creator of the beloved Moomin series, was a Swedish-speaking Finn who wrote her works in Swedish. (Fun fact: the first Japanese translation of Moomin was actually based on the English version, not the original Swedish.)
